Facial Trauma & Orthognathic Jaw Surgery
Facial Trauma
Maxillofacial injuries are commonly referred to as facial trauma and encompass any injury to the mouth, face and jaw. The majority of maxillofacial injuries are caused through sporting injuries, motor vehicle accidents, and work-based injuries. Dr. Nova Gibson is well versed in all facets of facial trauma and will be able to provide the best options for a multitude of treatment programs.
Orthognathic Jaw Surgery
Orthognathic surgery or corrective jaw surgery refers to the complicated surgery of the upper and/or lower jaw to correct bony asymmetry or jaw deficiency. Jaw surgery is performed to position the jaws into the correct relationship/symmetry. These procedures can improve a person’s ability to chew and improve airways as well provide the best facial aesthetics.
Most patients referred to Dr Nova Gibson for orthognathic surgery will be sent by their orthodontist as part of a combined orthodontic and surgical team approach. These patients often have an underlying jaw misalignment which cannot be treated with orthodontics alone.
Once this has occurred, Dr Nova Gibson will recommend the most appropriate treatment.
