Wisdom Teeth & Extractions

Dr Nova Gibson wisdom teethWisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the third molar teeth found in the upper and lower jaws.

Wisdom teeth usually start to erupt into the mouth between 16 and 21 years of age.  In many people there is insufficient room where the wisdom teeth can be trapped behind the second molar teeth and become impacted.  Sometimes wisdom teeth only rise part of the way (partially erupted) and get trapped.  When this occurs, they can cause recurring infections and severe pain.

Wisdom teeth removal may be a simple dental extraction procedure, which can be performed under local anaesthetic, or they may be very impacted requiring removal of bone and sectioning of the tooth for their extraction.  Frequently the surgical removal of wisdom teeth is performed under a general anaesthetic in hospital.

Dr Gibson will be able to advise the best treatment plan for the removal of your wisdom teeth at the time of your consultation.

Dental Extractions

Tooth extractions can be complicated due to an individual’s tooth anatomy and medical history. These procedures are best performed by a specialist who is qualified in both medicine and dentistry, such as Dr Gibson, whose surgical skill and experience ensures even the most complex tooth extraction is performed with little to no discomfort for the patient with the quickest recovery possible. As Dr Gibson is a surgeon, patients have the option of their procedure being undertaken in our state-of-the-art rooms under local anaesthetic or under general anaesthetic in a hospital environment.
